This week's theme: SATURNALIA!

You know that December holiday, celebrated for centuries? You know, you give gifts to loved ones, business and goverment are closed, you get drunk at parties with people you normally don't hang out with socially?

Thats right, SATURNALIA! The ancient Roman holiday of excess, turning social norms on their head, and sacrificing to the god Saturn. Way more ancient Saturnalia traditions made their way into the Christian winter holiday than you think - get ready to have your mind blown and feed your holiday spirit with interactive sacrifices.

GUESTS:

Andrew Colletti

In ancient Rome, just like today, no holiday celebration was complete without food. In this presentation, you’ll learn about the flavors of Saturnalia and taste a seasonal Roman treat from a 4th-century cookbook.

Andrew Coletti is a museum educator who has worked with ages pre-K to adult and consumed everything from duck brains to Mesopotamian barley beer. He recreates the food of the ancient world on his blog, Pass the Flamingo (www.passtheflamingo.com). Follow him @passtheflamingo on Instagram and Twitter.

Eric Grundhauser

Learn how best to celebrate, decorate, and dress for Saturnalia. Dig into the ceremonial clothes, couches, and salutations of the holiday and find out how they are reflected in our modern holiday.

Eric Grundhauser is a staff writer for Atlas Obscura - he lives in Brooklyn with his comic book collection. His work has been featured on Slate, NPR, Vanity Fair, The AV Club, Motherboard, Smithsonian, and anywhere reasonable content is sold. Helluva guy.
